You Won’t Know Until You Ask

When shopping for a new air conditioning system, there are several variables to consider. The size of your home, whether or not there is an existing infrastructure, energy efficiency, return on investment—all of these are important considerations to make. However, one of the most important things you should consider is the warranty.

How long does the warranty last? What parts, labor costs and additional situations does it cover? Do both the manufacturer and the contractor agree to honor it? Does your preferred air conditioner even come with a warranty? All of these are important questions that deserve answers, and you should make sure to find those answers and more when shopping for a new air conditioner.

Warranty Information You Need to Know

  • Is there a warranty? Most manufacturers (and contractors) provide a warranty of some type, but you should always ask. Only then will you get a definitive answer.
  • Read it. Seriously, read the warranty. Don’t just accept it at face value and move on to the next step. Read the warranty in its entirety to achieve a better understanding of what the manufacturer (and contractor) promises to provide.
  • Which parts are covered? Though most warranties will cover the important components of an air conditioning system, this will not always be the case. Determine what is covered, and what is not. The more the merrier, but the most important (and the most expensive) parts should factor heavily into your consideration.
  • What about labor? Most manufacturers’ warranties will not cover the cost of labor—initially or otherwise. Some might provide assistance, but this is not guaranteed. Make sure to ask! Also, ask your contractor whether or not they provide a separate warranty for labor costs.
  • Look out for “limited.” Limited lifetime warranties are not necessarily a bad thing, but they use the word “limited” for a reason. Determine what the reason is.
  • Voiding the warranty. Sometimes employing unauthorized contractors to service your air conditioning system will void the manufacturer’s warranty. Read the fine print to determine whether or not this is the case.

A warranty is an important component of your new air conditioning system—both for its parts and the labor required to install and service it. Ask the right questions to get the answers you want.
